The International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno was founded in 1963 and is one of the oldest and most important events in the field of visual communication in the world.

The birth of the Brno Biennial contributed to the cultural and political relations of the 1960s, accompanied by the efforts of Czechoslovak artists and designers who aspire to the right to creative freedom, conditioned by the possibilities of confronting their own design with the world. The founding generation of the Brno Biennale is the painter and graphic designer Jan Rajlich, the elders and art theorists Jiří Hlušička and Karel Holešovský.

In 1964, the Moravian Gallery in Brno organized the first Czechoslovak Poster Show and Promotional Graphics, which since 1966 has already established international cyclical exhibitions to cover a wide range of graphic design. The original polytematic structure of the Biennale was based on three exhibition disciplines. After 1968 the issue of exhibition production was launched for difficulty. Beginning in 1970, two main themes were discussed at the Brno Biennial: (1) Poster, corporate, information and advertising graphics; and (2) Graphic design and writing in books, magazines, newspapers and digital media.

The Brno Biennale has participated in its history by many prominent figures of graphic design, whether they presented their work as exhibiting authors, or participated in the event personally as members of international juries and lecturers at international symposia. In Brno, such designer names as Saul Bass, Roman Cieślewicz, Wim Crouwel, Alan Fletcher, Adrian Frutiger, Shigeo Fukuda, Milton Glaser, Ivan Chermayeff, Seymour Chwast, Mitsuo Katsui, Herb Lubalin, Ladislav Sutnar, Josef Tiff, Tadanori Yokoo, Hermann Zapf and others.
